The U11s decided at Thursday night’s training on how they were going to play their footy for season 2012. The team wanted to let the other U11s teams in their fixture know that they TACKLED, that they would be strong at CONTESTED POSSESSION and that they would be excellent at DISPOSALS. After the final siren sounded on Sunday the opposing team certainly knew who the Hornsby Berowra Eagles U11s are and how hard they play their footy. A great job was done by all in playing your brand of footy.

There were many highlights.

Congratulations to Harrison, Tom and Jack for playing your first game of AFL footy. You were all outstanding and made valuable contributions to your team.

Will C-E and Lochie showed they will both be extremely valuable additions to the U11s with solid performances. Both Will and Lochie got their hands on the footy a lot which was very pleasing to see.

Oliver, Jacob, Felix, Matthew, Cameron, Eddy, and James worked tirelessly on what was an exceptionally hot day for our first game. It was wonderful to see the boys up to some of their old tricks from last year as well as including the new members of the team in defensive and attacking raids.

Special mention must go to Matt and Oliver who had just come off the field having played up an age for the U12s.

Well done to Felix on winning the Man of the Match. Felix excelled in TACKLING the opposition on Sunday. He was also very reliable when asked to play in the backline by sticking with his man and stopping the opposition’s attacks.

Thanks to Tom and Jo for playing another game for the U11s. Tom finished with 4 goals and Jo set a few of them up perfectly with delivery from the midfield into the forward line. Both had exceptional games and the U11s learnt a lot from having you in the team.

Things to we will need to work on at Thursday night training.

Even though Sunday’s game was a very good result there are some areas of our game we will need to work on.

Communication amongst the team will need to be better this year especially now that we are able to shepherd our opposition off the ball. There were occasions when we had 2 vs 1 and we could have secured the CONTESTED POSSESSION better if we talked to each other.

At times in attack we were making it difficult for the ball carrier because we were standing still. The grounds are very big and we will need to take advantage of that by leading into space rather than standing still and calling for the ball.

We will also need to pay closer attention to the opposition forward line. If the coaches ask for you to play in the backline for a quarter that’s the job you will need to do for your team. We know everyone likes to score a goal but we also need to stop the opposition from scoring goals. There were times we had 2 backs against 4 forwards and that’s just not up to the standards you have set yourselves.

Maybe my ears were playing tricks on me in the hot weather but we might also need to do some work on singing the team song.

Overall it was a very positive result and a great start to season 2012.

Hornsby Berwora Eagles U11 vs Baulkham Hills Brown U11

Sunday 22/04/2012

The under 11’s were challenged by the Baulko U11 browns this week for their first home game of the season. The opening quarter was just what our team needed. The opening exchanges clearly showed that the U11 eagles were facing a team who came to play some footy and that our benchmarks of CONTESTED POSSESSION, TACKLES and DISPOSALS was going to be seriously tested. At quarter time we knew we were in a game.

After accepting the challenge the boys then went on to show the opposition what eagles footy is all about. Some great teamwork during the next three quarters left the U11 eagles firmly in control of the match. It was fantastic to see the team respond to the challenge and to continue to work tirelessly in defense and attack. The opposition coach complimented our boys on how well they played as a team and how good our DISPOSALS under pressure were. There have been some really pleasing efforts at training and your hard work is paying off.

There were many highlights.

Harrison and Tom both showed further improvement and are now getting a real feel for the game. Harrison made some great intercepts in defense and Toms work off the ball was great. Toms chasing in defense was very much appreciated.

Will C-E, Jacob, Nick and Felix worked well all over the park. We really need to watch Will and Nick with their contested marks. They are both setting the standard we all need to follow. Felix was inspirational and his attack on the ball is fearless. Jacob was super with some real hard ball gets and some goals that really took the wind from the opposition’s sails.

Cameron and James also work solidly around the field running out all four quarters for their team. Both attacked the ball well in CONTESTED POSSESSION, James playing what I believe was his best game of footy.

Lochie and Matt R showed the way with some long kicks into the oppositions danger zone. Matt R’s work in the ruck to get us going forward when it really mattered set the team up for a positive result. The opposition ruckman was a bit taller but Matt just wanted the ball more and that made a huge difference on the day. Congratulations on winning the man of the match.

Oliver, Matthew and Eddy played to their usual high standards. It was really pleasing to see Matt Hall and Oliver except the oppositions challenge to eagles footy when the going got tough. Your hardness at the ball and relentless TACKLES is just what the team needed. Eddy has continued to build a highlight reel for the season and the foot candy followed by the goal from the boundary line was beautiful to watch.

It was very pleasing to see a massive improvement on our positional play. Across the ground we were able to contest the footy. It made a big difference by having equal numbers in the backline. Great work boys.

Thanks to Jack, Lochie, Nick, Felix Oliver and Matt for playing another game for the U12s.

Things to we will need to work on at Thursday night training.

Even though Sunday’s game was a very good result there are some areas of our game we will need to work on.

CONTESTED POSSESSION when the ball is in the air is the main area that we can really improve on. There were times when we allowed our opposition to take marks without making it too difficult for them. It was great to see the team manning up but we need to take advantage of this by competing hard in the marking contest or spoiling the oppositions chance to mark the ball. We have discussed taking chest marks and we know we can all do that. To take our game to the next level we now need to beat out opposition to the drop zone and put our hands out in front to mark the ball.

Overall it was a very positive result and a great start to season 2012.

Hornsby Berwora Eagles U11 vs Westbrook U11

Sunday 06/05/2012

The under 11’s were away this week and were up against the Westbrook. The U11 eagles put on a fantastic display of team football. The boys did a great job of establishing our benchmarks of CONTESTED POSSESSION, TACKLES and DISPOSALS in the first quarter and maintaining them for the entire game. The teams approach to playing AFL and commitment to the way we play denied our opposition any real opportunity to get into the game. We always seemed to have our opposition under intense pressure with or without the ball. I’m sure all will agree the tackling was just exceptional.

It was very pleasing to see the continued development of the team. From the backline to the forward line the entire team has improved. It has been enjoyable to watch the boys add new skills and an element of risk to their game. Trying new things on game day like having a bounce or attempting an overhead contested mark is the way to improve your game. Having done it once means we can do it again and again. Don’t worry about making a mistake, your team will support you, just have a go.

I won’t often highlight results but on this occasion I will. When there is such a large spread of goal scorers it shows the U11 Eagles are all working for each other as a team. Unselfish play makes a great team. Well done Boys.

There were many highlights.

James, Harrison and Tom all showed further improvement. James is showing great commitment to the ball and is getting his hands on it more often. His tackling has improved immensely. Harrison made some great intercepts in defense and his running forward and back is exceptional. Toms work off the ball was great and in the last quarter he showed he can mix it with the opposition’s ruckmen.

Running is important and Oliver, Matthew, Kai and Jacob sure covered some ground on Sunday. It was really pleasing to see the four of you take on the opposition with your run and carry .Matt H pulled off some bell ringer tackles which really made the opposition think about going for the ball. Oliver played some great eagles footy by setting up his teammates for goals many times. Well done scoring 3 goals Jacob, your set shots are becoming very reliable and the run and bounce along the boundary line was superb. It’s great to watch you burst from packs with the footy Kai. Keep it up. Your commitment to the footy is also very good and something the team can all learn from.

Will C-E and Felix are both doing a super job especially when asked to play in defense. It really makes a huge difference to the team to have someone cutting off the opposition’s attacks. You both did a super job of this on the weekend. Wills contested marking and disposal to a teammate is an example we should all follow. Felix continues to improve and stand clear if he decides to attack the ball.

Nick, Eddy and Cameron worked well all over the park. It was pleasing to see you all getting right into the battle. We really enjoy watching Nick’s commitment to the ball. Keep it up Nick. Cameron’s kicking has improved out of sight and watching him get off the mark and take his time during set shots is what we all should be doing. Well done Cam. You have become a very reliable player Eddy. I know as a coach I can set you a task, like playing half forward and delivering the ball to the forwards and you will do it for your team. Well done Eddy.

Matt R’s work in the ruck to get us going forward should never be discounted. He has become so good at it and we all need to make sure we take advantage. Make sure if you’re in the midfield you listen to his instructions and get into position. Great work Matt R.

It was very pleasing to see a further improvement on our positional play. Across the ground we were able to contest the footy. It made a big difference by having equal numbers across the field and our manning up was first class. Great work boys.

Well done to Matt H for winning the player of the match. We all know how important TACKLES are to the way we play as a team. You led the way Matt and inspired your team to follow. Great job.

Things to we will need to work on at Thursday night training.

Even though Sunday’s game was a very good result there are some areas of our game we will need to work on.

As a coach I notice a lot of what you do at training. Often I watch as you do amazing things at training. It’s really pleasing to see. As a team we must challenge ourselves to also do those amazing things on game day. There we some exceptional kicks to our forward line on the weekend and some of them were marked. Others weren’t but were begging for someone to run, jump and take an overhead mark. This is an area that will help us in both attack and defense and as a team we shall watch closely for the first players to have a real crack at it.

Overall it was a very pleasing and positive result.

Hornsby Berwora Eagles U11 vs Baulkham Hills Brown U11

Sunday 13/05/2012

The under 11’s were away this week and were up against a team we recently played on our home ground. It was evident from the first bounce that the Baulko team was looking for some revenge. It was also clear to see the U11 eagles were up for the challenge and ready to put on a fantastic display of team football.

The boys always try to establish our benchmarks of CONTESTED POSSESSION, TACKLES and DISPOSALS in the first quarter. This was not going to be easy today as we had a very determined team as well as some quite tricky weather conditions. The eagles stuck at it for four quarters and really focused on playing footy. Our focus and concentration on playing footy along with some spirited TACKLING ensured a very positive result for the boys on the day.

The game seemed like it was going to be determined by who had the assistance of the strong breeze however the eagles managed to score 3 goals against the wind which really made a difference.

There were many highlights.

Running was going to be an important facet of the game today and Kai sure showed some run when he had the ball. His attack on the footy was superb and well done on winning best on ground. He was supported well by Oliver and Will who also covered plenty of territory chasing the ball down in defense. Both Oliver and Will were superb in the backline in the last quarter by continually cutting off the ball before it got into Baulkos forward line. Matthew H played another solid game supporting his teammates with some strong tackling. Jacob continues to improve and his 3 goals put a lot of pressure on the Baulko team. Jack C also chipped in with some handy touches and his goal scoring has become very reliable. Well done Jack C.

James continues to get more and more footy and his tackling has been superb. Harrison showed further improvement. Harrison made some great tackles and if it wasn’t for the bounce of the footy would have scored a few goals. Felix was his dependable self, winning the footy many times to stop the opposition attacks. Teams are also learning not to run near him when they have the ball or they get smashed.

Eddy is still working on his highlight reel. It seems if there is an impossible way to do something Eddy is going to try and succeed. He also looks good in the process!!! Cameron worked well all over the park. Cameron took some nice marks and made some great tackles. Well done Cam. Matt R’s work in the ruck against a much taller opponent was super. His big kicks downfield were also just what his team needed on such a windy day. Jack S did a great job supporting in the ruck and also scored his first AFL goal. Congratulations Jack S.

It was very pleasing to see the team focus on playing footy from start to finish and represent their club in such a spirited manner. Great work boys.

Things to we will need to work on at Thursday night training.

Even though Sunday’s game was a very good result there are some areas of our game we will need to work on.

Some run and carry sure would have helped us into the strong wind on Sunday. We have been working on linking our hand passes. We will need to practice moving the ball down the field with hand passes and some bounces of the ball. On windy days like Sunday have this skill will be a great benefit to the team.

It would seem we still have some work to do on the team song………

Overall it was a very pleasing and positive result.
